Sustainability

At Wine & Books Hotels, sustainability is a choice present from the first trace of the project. From the conception of the building to daily operation, we adopt efficient and responsible solutions with the aim of reducing environmental impact, promoting guest comfort and encouraging more conscious practices.

Comfort, innovation and environmental responsibility go hand in hand in all the group’s units.

Concept and Sustainable Construction

Sustainability starts at the building design stage, through the choice of efficient and balanced construction solutions, both thermally and economically. Each project has been designed to reduce environmental impact, while simultaneously ensuring comfort and energy efficiency.

Lisbon

In Lisbon, a ventilated stone facade system was implemented, which creates a space between the exterior cladding and the building insulation. This solution promotes natural ventilation, reduces heat absorption in the hot months, and minimizes thermal dispersion in the cold months, contributing to a more stable and comfortable indoor environment.

In the event of future intervention, this technique allows for the replacement of only the damaged elements, reducing material waste.

Porto and Algarve

In Porto and in the Algarve, the external coating with Capoto ensures high thermal and acoustic insulation, reducing thermal bridges and contributing to the stability of the interior temperature.

In all units, the high efficiency acoustic-thermal frames and glass allow for natural thermal control throughout the year, reducing the need for air conditioning and, consequently, energy consumption.

Energy and Efficiency

Most of the heating of hot water (AQS) is provided by solar panels, using renewable energy to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Lighting in all hotels is 100% LED, a technology that converts around 70% of the energy consumed into light. Compared to traditional solutions, LED bulbs produce less heat, have a longer lifespan, and significantly reduce energy and maintenance costs.

In the hotels in Lisbon, Porto and Sintra, high-efficiency boilers have also been installed, reducing gas consumption. In the Algarve, the gradual replacement of traditional boilers with high-efficiency systems is underway, with completion expected by the end of 2026.

Taps and showers are equipped with flow reducers, promoting water savings without compromising the comfort of the experience.

Scanning and Paper Reduction

Within the scope of sustainable innovation, Wine & Books Hotels offers the PressReader service, allowing guests to access international newspapers and magazines in digital format. Simply connect to the hotel’s Wi-Fi network and download the application – no need for a username or password.

In the hotels in Lisbon, Porto, and Sintra, the check-in process is 100% paper-free, with a digital signature of the registration form. Communication with guests is done through technology, via emails, QR codes, and content available on the room televisions. At check-out, invoices are sent by email.

In the Algarve, this system will be implemented by the end of 2026.

Sustainable Water Management

In Lisbon and Porto, purified water from the brand EAU is available through the Safepath system with a copper line with antibacterial and antiviral properties. This solution eliminates the logistics of transportation and significantly reduces CO₂ emissions, eliminating the need for storage and reducing the use of disposable plastic.

In the Algarve, the use of glass bottles in rooms and restaurants reinforces the commitment to reducing plastic waste and protecting the region’s natural environment.

Food and Circular Economy

The kitchen privileges local producers and suppliers, promoting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impact associated with food transportation. Seasonal products are valued and an approach of using ingredients to their full potential is adopted — peels in infusions, bones turned into broths — reducing food waste.

The coffee served is from the Delta Cafés brand, a nationally recognized reference for quality and commitment to sustainability. It is certified organic UTZ coffee. The brand has also developed its own project for collecting and recycling capsules, reusing their content as fertilizer.

Sustainable Materials and Reduction of Plastics

The access cards to the rooms are made of bamboo – a natural, renewable and biodegradable resource – with the same durability as conventional plastic cards.
The hotel signage is made of wood, reinforcing the reduction in the use of plastics.

Sustainable amenities

The amenities were carefully selected based on a policy of plastic elimination and waste reduction. Bamboo toothbrushes, paper and organic cotton swabs, organic material shower caps, and cardboard bags are some of the solutions adopted.

The range is part of the Care About Earth program, developed by the supplier GM, which prioritizes sustainable alternatives from the origin of raw materials to final recycling.

Algarve

Use of eco-pump dispensers, eliminating individual packaging and significantly reducing plastic waste.

Lisbon and Porto

Solid amenities 100% plastic-free (shampoo, shower gel and conditioner), whose production uses up to nine times less water compared to traditional liquid formulas – a differentiating solution in the Iberian Peninsula.

Cleaning Products

In our Lisbon, Porto, and Sintra hotels, we use the SURE range, made up of 100% biodegradable and plant-based products, without artificial dyes, chlorine, phosphates, or synthetic perfumes.

Cleaning is done with damp mops and eco-pump systems for controlled dosage, reducing waste, increasing efficiency, and minimizing plastic consumption through refill systems.

Spa Products

Our Spas, are selected brands aligned with ethical and sustainable principles.
Aroms Natur uses raw materials of ethical origin and fair trade, such as argan oil produced by local communities.

In the Algarve, THALGO is also used, a brand linked to the protection of marine ecosystems and partner of the association The SeaCleaners in cleaning the oceans and reducing plastic pollution.

Environmental Certification

The Wine & Books Hotels is distinguished with the Green Key certificate, one of the main international seals of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation in the tourism sector.

Awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education, this certificate involves rigorous audits and compliance with high environmental standards.

By choosing the Wine & Books Hotels, guests actively contribute to more responsible and sustainable practices.
